Dhokra is one of India’s most ancient metal casting traditions, dating back over 4,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization. Created using the intricate lost-wax technique, each piece begins as a hand-sculpted wax model that is encased in clay and cast in molten metal. Once the mold is broken, the form cannot be replicated—making every creation inherently one of a kind.

Characterized by its textured surfaces, elongated forms, and primitive elegance, Dhokra carries a distinctive rustic charm. The craft is practiced by tribal artisan communities across central and eastern India, where techniques are passed down through generations. Cham Singh Besra comes from a family of traditional Dhokra artisans and has spent more than two decades mastering the intricate lost-wax metal casting technique. Today, he continues to practice and share this heritage, helping keep the timeless Dhokra tradition alive for future generations.

From Wax to Metal

Dhokra Casting Process

Step inside the 4,000-year-old Dhokra lost-wax casting tradition, where every piece is shaped entirely by hand. Transforming raw wax into timeless metal craft.

Step 1: Clay Core

Preparing the clay to covering the wax mould when the form is created by the artisan.

Step 2: Wax Modeling

Beeswax mixed with resin and oil is rolled into thin threads and applied over the clay core. Intricate patterns and details are handcrafted entirely in wax.

Step 3: Form Making

The form is create by the artisan and the covered with the clay and then heated to melt the wax and leave the cavity in the shape of the form.

Step 4: Metal Casting

Molten brass or bronze is poured into the empty cavity of the mould. The metal takes the exact shape and detailing of the wax design.

Step 5: Finish Product

After cooling, the outer clay mould is carefully broken to reveal the metal artifact. Each Dhokra piece is unique because the mould cannot be reused.
